IMAGES... from the ashes
- is a book of my photography, although to me it is essentially a book about my life.
I am presently seeking support via kickstarter, so that I can (add space here)not only compile and publish quantities of this book sufficient to meet demand, but also avail myself of opportunities to showcase this work via several gallery exhibitions that have been offered to me. === Here is my story: I am 71, and have been a photographer for 50+ years. Although my work has been featured in many exhibitions and elsewhere, I never properly published a book until now. I lost most of what I owned in a terribly fierce Malibu fire in 2008. Among the casualties were decades of photos that pre-dated the digital age. These photos were arrayed in my basement, and I was actually in the process of digitizing them. As they were from the film era, they were negatives, which are as flammable as can be. Nothing from the basement survived. The loss of decades of my life’s work, my favorite pieces from days gone by, was traumatic. But with the help of Peggy - I was able to regain perspective, and turn the lament into resolve. And that resolve is really what IMAGES ... From the Ashes is about.
L to R - a Venice Beach mural; sample of "black, white, & color together" in Cassis; and a San Tropez street (can u discern the image? it's Brigitte Bardot.)I decided that rather than crying over the lost work, it would be way more constructive to pay a lasting tribute to it. So - I set out to re-create a handful of images that were most permanently etched in my mind and soul. I knew I had to do it painstakingly, so that each re-creation was artistically true to the original. I present them in this book. This book is divided into 12 sections or categories, and each of the first 10 sections begins with a re-creation and a narrative about it, followed by other photographs belonging to that same category or genre. Each section concludes with summary copy - and by adding the narrative and copy, I hope to tell a great story. I hope it sets this book apart from other fine art photography books. But what I hope for most, however, is that I can inspire others who experience misfortunes – and we all do at some point – to rise above them and channel them into determination, focus, and resolve. It's healthy, rewarding, it keeps you from dwelling in the past, andputs you in the now. I appreciate your interest and support. Sample photos from the book are above and on the “sneak peak” page. I hope you enjoy them, and thank you again. Billy Blake firstname.lastname@example.org
All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost. From the ashes a fire shall be woken, A light from the shadows shall spring; Renewed shall be blade that was broken, The crownless again shall be king.- J.R.R. Tolkien
